CILE Announcements

	Professor Ronald Brand and third-year students Marc Coda, Kerry Ann Stare, and Rick Grubb traveled to Al Ain, United Arab Emirates to provide training on October 1-6, 2009, to students at the UAE University College of Law in preparation for their participation in the 2010 Vis International Arbitration Moot. The training is funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce Commercial Law Development Program, and is designed to aid in the development of the law school curriculum in international commercial law and arbitration. Similar training has been provided by Pitt Law’s Center for International Legal Education to the University of Bahrain in 2007-08 and Sultan Qaboos University in Oman in 2008-09.
	On Tuesday July 27, CILE Director Ron Brand met in Washington D.C. with alumni from Pitt Law's international programs.
	On February 26, 2009, Professor Dr. Annette Kur, Unit Head at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property, Competition and Tax Law, Munich Germany, presented Pitt Law's 4th Annual Distinguished Lecture in Intellectual Property Law "The European Community Design Right: A Uniquely Tailored System for Protecting Industrial Designs". A panel discussion comparing EU and US design protection and featuring Donald S. Chisum, Daniel Brean, and Janice Mueller followed the lecture.
	The United Nations has rolled out a very useful database and lecture series on international legal issues. The lecture series includes presentations by a small group of the most eminent international legal scholars from around the world. Notably, the two lectures on the UN Sales Convention are provided by our own Harry Flechtner, and can be viewed at http://untreaty.un.org/cod/avl/ls/Flechtner_IEL.html.

	WorldQuest competition 10/14/08 5:30 -8:00 Omni William Penn Hotel Downtown Once again, CILE will sponsor a Pitt Law team to compete in "WorldQuest," the annual international quiz challenge hosted by the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh. Pitt Law teams have either won or taken second every year it has participated and always on the strength of our students. The International Law Society at Pitt Law recruits and trains the student teams that participate.
	“Equity in Jurisdiction: A Comparative Approach to Personal Jurisdiction” by Professor Volker Behr from the University of Augsburg on Tuesday, September 30, 2008, at 12 noon in Room G12. A lecture comparing EU and US rules and practices and offer insights into their similarities and differences.
	CILE has been awarded a contract under the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) administered by the U.S. Department of Commerce to provide curriculum development and training at Sultan Qaboos Law School in Muscat, Oman.
	Professor Vivian Curran addressed the Pittsburgh Region's B'Nai Zion Humanitarian Award Tribute honoring Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg at the Duquesne Club on May 15, 2008. Professor Curran spoke about the role of law in France and Germany during the Nazi era.
	CILE Assistant Director, Wes Rist, will present a talk on Legislating Corporate Ethics in International Law : Human Rights Obligations for State/Corporate Enterprises at a May 21, 2008 UCIS faculty development workshop titled "Corporate Ethics and Human Rights"
	Seven law students have been awarded Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for this summer and the coming school year: Esther Mosimann (Italian), Caitlin Price (Arabic), Aleksandra "Sasha" Williams (Ukrainian), Amanda Fisher (Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian), Mark Sanofsky (Portuguese), Stephanie Kurtz (Slovak).
	Professor Jules Lobel, an expert on U.S. constitutional law and international human rights, testified on April 10 at a House of Representatives Foreign Affairs subcommittee about reforming the War Powers Act... full announcement - testimony - video
	"Biotechnology Patenting in India: Will Bio-Generics Lead a 'Sunrise Industry' to Bio-Innovation?" written by our Professor Janice Mueller-- ever at the forefront of domestic and internationally important patent research-- is on SSRN's Top Ten download list for the Entrepreneurship Research & Policy Network.
	Our first-ever Space Moot team participated in the North American round of the 2008 Manfred Lachs Space Moot Competition during the first weekend in April. Their brief was ranked 4th best in the entire competition and this pioneering self-motivated team garnered direct praise and encouragement from space law practitioners and even faculty at other law schools.
	Professor Flechtner wrote and performed a new song, The Ballad of Blue Hills '05, for this year's Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition in Vienna. There's a video of one of his past Vienna performances on YouTube.
	April 10 Foreign Summer Internship Meeting at 12:00 "Preparing for your International Internship:" An informational meeting for students with overseas internship for the 2008 summer with discussions by Prof. Bernard Hibbitts on JURIST involvement, Law Librarian Linda Tashbook on international research, and Wes Rist on goals and activities for overseas internships.
	This year CILE proudly added one more team, Bahrain, to our Vis consortium. Teams from Ukraine, Serbia, and Kosovo are also in the consortium. Students from last year's Pitt Vis team
