Nordenberg Fellowships

Three Fellowships of $5,000 each for Internships in Europe

Application deadline: March 1, 2007

Dr. Alberta Sbragia, the Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg University Professor, has agreed to use part of the Professorship funds available to her to support up to three fellowships per year for law students with summer internships at institutions in Europe. A Nordenberg Fellow will be funded in the amount of $5,000 to cover travel and expenses. An initial payment of $4,000 will be provided at the beginning of the summer in which the internship occurs, with an additional $500 paid at the end of each of the following fall and spring semesters.

Two of the fellowships will be designated for students selected in a competition to be hosted for internships by two of the most prestigious institutions focused on European law. Those institutions are:

Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, Hamburg, Germany

The Max Planck Institute is the premier comparative and international private law institute in Europe. The student selected for the Nordenberg Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute may be assigned a specific project or projects by the Institute, but may be able to conduct his or her own research. Students applying for the Max Planck Internship Fellowship should include a research proposal for self-directed research. Further information on the Max Planck Institute may be found at: http://www.mpipriv.de/ww/en/pub/home.cfm

Institute for European Studies, Brussels, Belgium

The Institute for European Studies (IES) has rapidly become one of the leading sources of scholarship and programs on European law. Affiliated with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (the Flemish Free University of Brussels), it hosts scholars, lectures, and major programs, drawing on the many lawyers and legal institutions headquartered in Brussels. It is home to the Program on International Legal Cooperation (PILC), a leading European Masters of Law program celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Further information on IES may be found at: http://www.ies.be/

A third fellowship will be available for a student who has arranged an internship opportunity in Europe.

Each Nordenberg Fellow will:

  1. complete an internship of at least 2 months duration at a location in Europe during the appropriate summer;
  2. complete a course in EU Law either prior to or during the academic year following the internship;
  3. attend at least two lectures sponsored by the European Union Center of Excellence (EUCE) during the academic year following completion of the internship;
  4. be available to meet with potential School of Law applicants when they visit Pittsburgh; and
  5. be available to visit colleges and universities in Western Pennsylvania (at CILE expense – and at times that will not conflict with classes) to speak about his or her internship experience to students who may consider attending the School of Law.
