Course Description

This course will introduce students to the main features of Russian and Ukranian contract law. Both Russia and Ukraine have a common legal history, but it would be a misconception to assume that the contract laws of both countries are identical. The course aims at discovering common features and differences of both legal systems, trends in legislative development and peculiarities of the Russian and Ukranian legal concepts, principles, and institutions compared to those existing in the EU and US. Special emphasis will be placed on the existing security devices and contractual remedies, the role of case law and interpretations provided by higher courts, and problems of contract enforcement.
