Mock Trial Program

Inaugurated in 2009-2010, the University of Pittsburgh School of Law Mock Trial Program is overseen by Director of Trial Advocacy Michael Gianantonio. The program allows students to participate in both regional and national Mock Trial Competitions, which include some of the largest in the nation:

Team Selection

Team members will be selected from participants in the Law School’s Trial Advocacy Class in the fall semester based upon dedication, skill and the willingness to dedicate the necessary time to your teammates.  Teams are guided by multiple experienced adjunct coaches who will prioritize teaching the trial fundamentals and tactics necessary to be good lawyers and competitors.  Also, any 2L winners of the Murray S. Love Moot Court Competition will be welcomed to participate in the program.

Service on the Mock Trial Team does not foreclose competing in the Murray S. Love Trial Moot Court Competition, though scheduling conflicts are possible. Subject to applicable maximums, team members may earn academic credit for their service.

Continuity and Experience: 1Ls, 2Ls, and 3Ls

The Mock Trial Program values continuity and experience. Therefore, second-year students on the team are encouraged to try out again as third-year students or to contribute in some other capacity. We encourage first-year students who may be interested in competing to come and participate at practices.  In this role, they may be asked to serve as witnesses or possibly even try the case against the competition teams. Because of the paramount importance of their academic course load, first-year students cannot compete in moot court activities.
