Joint Degrees: Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business
JD/MBA
Juris Doctor / Master of Business Administration
The daily interaction of law and business in our society places very real demands on attorneys to approach the practice of law with an interdisciplinary perspective. Motivated by the increasingly intricate legal needs of society, the University of Pittsburgh's School of Law and the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business offer a joint-degree program that provides rigorous and integrated training, effectively merging the two allied fields.
Graduates of this cooperative program not only develop more marketable professional skills and, therefore, enjoy expanded employment opportunities, but they also gain a broad-based knowledge and understanding of the fundamental roles of law and business in society - a perspective that significantly enhances the scope and quality of their professional training.
Each student must satisfy both schools' requirements as modified by participation in the joint-degree program. The credit requirements are as follows:
| Katz Graduate School of Business JD/MBA |
Juris Doctor / Master of Business Administration | JD = 76 MBA = 39 |
Total Credits for the joint-degree = 115
Application Instructions
Admission to the joint-degree program is ordinarily granted either prior to attending the Katz School of Business and the School of Law or during the first year of study at the law school. In exceptional cases and with permission, however, students may apply to the joint-degree program after completing the second year of law school. Occasionally, a student might begin studies in the Katz School of Business. Such students may apply to the joint-degree program during their first semester of study.
Candidates must complete each school's application in addition to a joint-degree program application. A copy of the joint-degree program application must be sent to each school. After a student has been accepted to each school individually, a joint committee consisting of representatives from Katz and the School of Law decides on admission to the joint-degree program.
Applicants for the University of Pittsburgh JD/MBA joint-degree program must complete a formal application for admission separately to both the School of Law and the Katz Graduate School of Business, and return these forms according to the application deadline of each school. Early application is preferred. Consideration for the joint-degree program is given only to those who have been accepted for admission to both the School of Law and Katz Graduate School of Business.
Tuition and Fees
All joint-degree students in the JD/MBA program, regardless of whether they have already completed their first year at either the Katz School or the School of Law, will be charged tuition at different rates. During the first year at the Law School, students are charged at the then-current Law School tuition rate. For the first year at the Katz School, students are charged at the then-current (Katz School) tuition rate. Tuition for the remaining three semesters will be equal to the sum of 85 percent of the then-current School of Law tuition and 42.5 percent of the then-current Katz School tuition.
Financial Aid
Students may apply for financial aid from the school in which they are attending full-time. Reference to each school's financial aid forms is strongly recommended. Deadlines for scholarship and/or loans may differ from school to school. The earlier applications are filed, the sooner an answer is communicated.
