Environmental Law Clinic
Through the generosity of the Howard and Vira Heinz Endowments, the
Environmental Law Clinic welcomed its first students in January of
2001. The Environmental Law Clinic is a primary means of meeting the
requirements to receive a certificate of specialization in
Environmental Law, Science and Policy.
The Clinic has a mission of: developing students' knowledge, skill, and professionalism in environmental law practice through actual client representation; teaching students to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams; and fulfilling a need in the community for legal and related technical assistance on environmental and community health issues for those who otherwise could not afford such assistance.
The Clinic utilizes interdisciplinary teams of law students and graduate students in public health to provide legal and related technical services to our clients. The Clinic provides a range of services from evaluation of an environmental or community health problem to devise a range of options for our clients to preparation and presentation of educational materials to adversarial proceedings.
Clinic classes meet two times per week to discuss the practical application of rules and procedures, case progress, substantive issues, research strategies, professional and ethical considerations, and client relations, among other issues. For some matters, the students will have primary responsibility, as Certified Legal Interns, for client representation.
