Current Issues in Health Law, Professor Meisel: Class will meet on Monday, January 28 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in Room G12. They will be speaking on the topic of "Global Health and Human Rights: A Panel Discussion with Physicians Working in Africa."

Bringing Europe to Pittsburgh
Wednesday, January 30, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m., Teplitz Moot Courtroom

The Center for International Legal Education along with the European Union Center of Excellence/European Studies Center of the University Center for International Studies is hosting "Bringing Europe to Pittsburgh." The event will be a panel of three visiting law professors from Europe discussing topics including "Turkey's Accession to the EU," "What's New in the EU," and "Europe and Legal Education." The speakers include Professor Yesim Atamer from Istanbul Bilgi Law Faculty in Turkey; Richard Wainwright, a former European Commission lawyer; and Marco Gardini from the Faculty of Law at the University of Parma in Italy.

CILE Fellowship 2008: Study/Internship Abroad Fellowship

To encourage JD students to engage in international study, CILE is offering fellowships for students pursuing study, research or internships abroad in 2008. Each fellowship will be in an amount from $500 to $1,000, depending upon need, merit and the number of students selected for funding. Deadline is Friday, February 29.

Nordenberg Fellowship

One Nordenberg Fellowship remains open for students considering summer internships in Europe. Students pursuing their own internship in Europe are free to apply for the Fellowship. The Nordenberg Fellowships grant students $5,000 to cover expenses for the internship. Students must make an appointment with Assistant Director, Wes Rist (dwrist@pitt.edu), in order to apply for this fellowship. Deadline is Wednesday, February 13.

Sessions run from Monday, January 28 through Friday, February 8 (by appointment)

Perhaps you need some encouragement to begin your search or are wondering what should I do next? Now is a great time to meet with a CSO counselor to help you focus/refocus your energies on your job search. 2L and 3L students can schedule an appointment by emailing dschoch@pitt.edu. If your schedule does not permit a meeting during these weeks, students are welcome to schedule an appointment on another date.

All Students-Save the Date-Attorney Expo (Table Talk)

Learn about different practice areas, both traditional and non-traditional, from expert resources: the attorneys themselves! This is a great opportunity to explore different legal practice areas as well as non-traditional settings. All law students are invited to drop by to talk to practitioners, ask questions and network with local attorneys. This is the Thirteenth Annual program Talk and we expect over 35 attorneys to participate. A complete list of attorneys and practice areas will be available closer to the event date.

REGISTRAR'S OFFICE

Registrar's Service Window Change in Hours of Operation

After consultation with the SBA, the Registrar's Office will be reducing the hours during which the Service Window is open during non-peak periods. Effective February 1, the Registrar's Office Service Window hours of operation will be 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. This change will allow the staff to focus more directly on transactions at the window during those hours and on other duties during non-window hours, thereby providing more effective and efficient service overall.

$1,000 Prize for Pitt IP Student

The Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association is soliciting applications for the 2008 Student Leadership Award. This award is given annually to a University of Pittsburgh law student who has demonstrated leadership in the study of intellectual property law, as demonstrated by performance in IP courses, participation in IP-related extracurricular activities, and writing on IP-related topics. A full list of selection criteria, and an explanation of the application procedures, is available at http://www.piplaonline.org under the link "2008 Intellectual Property Law Student Leadership Award."

The competition is open to all JD students at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, whether or not they are enrolled in the IP Certificate program. The winner receives a check for $1,000 from PIPLA.
Applications must be submitted by February 20, 2008.

George Lakoff Conference

The School of Law will be hosting a conference on the work of Professor George Lakoff on Friday, February 8. Professor Lakoff will offer a 12:00 p.m. presentation: "The 21st Century Brain: Why It Matters for the Academic and Political Worlds."

Professor Lakoff is a professor of Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of such works as: Don't Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values, Frame the Debate (2004); Moral Politics: How Liberals and Conservatives Think (2d ed. 2002).

The conference will include morning and afternoon panels considering the implications of Professor Lakoff's work for our understanding of law, language, and the mind. Panelists will include legal scholars and scholars from the fields of English and Linguistics.

Interested students are encouraged to attend.

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Environmental Law Council

The Environmental Law Council will hold a general meeting Thursday, January 31 at 12:00 p.m. in Room G12. We will be discussing our spring fundraiser, the eating contest, as well as planning a semester social activity. Members and non-members are encouraged to attend.

National Lawyers Guild-Talk by Dan Kovalik

The Pitt Law Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild will be hosting a talk by Dan Kovalik on Thursday, January 31 at 12:00 p.m. in Room 111. Dan Kovalik is one of the lead counsel for plaintiffs in Alien Tort Claims Act cases against the Coca-Cola Company, Drummond and Occidental Petroleum-cases which allege that these companies were complicit in serious human rights abuses in Colombia, South America. He is also a recipient of Project Censored Award for an article he co-wrote about the unprecedented murder of trade unionists in Colombia.

PLISF-Request for Donations

PLISF is holding its 22nd Annual Auction on Thursday, February 28. This is the largest social event of the year for the Law School. All the proceeds from the auction go to provide stipends for law students to participate in public-service oriented work during the summer. PLISF requests that anyone in the Pitt Law community-faculty, staff, alumni, and students-who would like to donate something for our auction, or who may have family, friends, or social or business contacts who might like to donate, to please let us know. Tutoring Elementary and High School Students in East Liberty

For almost twenty years, the East End Cooperative Ministry has made available a tutoring program to elementary and high school students at the East Liberty Presbyterian Church at 116 S. Highland Avenue in East Liberty (no more than an easy 10 to 15 minute drive from the Law School). Tutoring occurs most days during the week after 3:00 p.m. Many law students have volunteered as tutors. Both tutors and "tutees" have benefited in numerous ways from the experience. The program can serve as many students as there are tutors available. Any law student interested in volunteering as a tutor should contact Brad Yoder at 412-361-0450. His e-mail address is brad@bradyoder.com. If you first want to talk to someone at the Law School about the program and its benefits, you should contact Professor Luneburg (wvl@pitt.edu).

  • The ABA Section of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice is hosting the 2008 Gellhorn-Sargentich Law Student Essay Competition discussing a problem or issue relating to presidential control of agency rulemaking. Entries must be received by 7:00 p.m. on March 31.
  • The ELI-ABA SEER-NAELS writing competition entry deadline is April 4. First prize is $2,000 and an offer of publication in ELR. The competition squib: The Constitution has long been interpreted by the courts and understood by most Americans to support comprehensive environmental protections. However, arguments targeting the constitutional legitimacy of environmental laws are gaining new traction in the federal courts. To inform the debate, we invite law students to submit papers exploring current issues of constitutional environmental law. More information here: http://www2.eli.org/writingcontest.htm.
  • The Harvard Project on International Climate Agreements invites submission of papers focused on the design of international climate policy architectures. Papers should propose a complete policy framework to succeed the Kyoto Protocol in the post-2012 period. The Harvard Project will select one or more submitted papers and award winning authors an honorarium of $3,000 per paper. The Harvard Project will publish the winning paper through the Project's Working Paper Series and website: www.belfercenter.org/climate.
