Endowment Scholarships

Endowment Scholarship Application Process

The University of Pittsburgh School of Law offers endowment funds. Funding for the  endowments come from generous donations from various sources (alumni, law offices, attorneys, professors, etc.). Funds from these sources are available to all students that complete the application process listed below. Endowments are NOT automatically renewed each year; therefore you should follow the application process listed below to be considered each year.

Application Process for Prospective First Year Students
To be considered for any endowments, the only form prospective first year students must complete is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1st. The FAFSA can be completed on-line at www.StudentAid.gov using your U.S. Department of Education PIN and the University of Pittsburgh's school code 008815. Prospective students awarded an endowment will be notified in writing by April 1st.

Application Process for All Continuing Students
For continuing students to be considered for any endowment, students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the application in PittFund$Me with your resume and essay attached by April 1st. The FAFSA can be completed on-line at www.StudentAid.gov using your U.S. Department of Education PIN and the University of Pittsburgh's school code 008815.  The application in PittFund$Me can be found in your my.pitt.edu portal.  Here is the instructions for the PittFund$Me database.  Continuing students awarded any endowment will be notified in writing generally by June.

Endowment Scholarships

Arnold B. Silverman Endowment - 2L & 3L only

  • This endowment is available to students who exhibit a commitment to pursue the field of intellectual property as evidenced by (a) an express statement of an intent to specialize in intellectual property and having taken at least one intellectual course at the School of Law and/or (b) participation in an intellectual property pursuit in law school, such as an intellectual property moot court competition, an intellectual property paper or other pursuit deemed as ample evidence of a genuine interest in intellectual property.

Morris M. Berger Scholarship - 2L & 3L only

  • The purpose of this scholarship is to support financial aid for a student with an interest in torts. The recipient should demonstrate excellence in the field of torts. Consideration will be given to a student who has evidenced an interest in preserving the rights of individuals who have been injured as the result of the negligent or other improper conduct of others.

Jack McGregor Scholarship - 2L & 3L only

  • The purpose of this endowment shall be to provide scholarship support to financially needy student who have demonstrated strong academic performance in prior studies and who have made a commitment to utilize their law degree working in the public sector.

Alfred V. Papa Memorial Scholarship - Incoming 1L 

  • The purpose of this endowment is to provide scholarship to a student based on both academic merit and financial need. Consideration will be given to students from Western Pennsylvania area - primarily Lawrence, Butler, Beaver, and Allegheny counties.

George Bloom Scholarship - 2L & 3L only

  • This endowment is available to second year law students with possible renewal for the third year provided that an application is submitted in the third year. The recipient will be a resident of Pennsylvania and demonstrate financial need and high moral and scholastic achievement.

Arthur J. Murphy, Jr. Scholarship - All students

  • This endowment is available to a needy student with a surname of Murphy.

Norman Gluck Scholarship - 3L only

  • This scholarship is available to two third year students. The recipients are to be selected based on financial need and academic merit.

Edward A. and Charles S. Perlow Scholarship - Incoming 1L

  • This scholarship represents a three-year financial aid commitment to an incoming student, assuming a satisfactory level of academic performance. The amount of the annual award is to decrease from the first to the third year.

Walter Griffith Powell Scholarship - Incoming 1L

  • This scholarship is available to a resident of Allegheny County.

Michael F. Ruggio Endowed Scholarship - 2L & 3L

  • This endowment is available to provide support for tuition and other education-related expenses for students. Preference will be given to students (i) with strong academic performance, (ii) who have graduated from a New York state college or university, and/or (iii) have a demonstrated interest in healthcare or white-collar crime law. 

George E. Schumacher Memorial Lecture - 2L & 3L only

  • This endowment is available to a second or third year student who demonstrates financial need.

John H. Sorg and Thomas Howell Burchfield Scholarship - Incoming 1L

  • This scholarship is available to a worthy student demonstrating financial need.

Nathan M. Raphael Memorial Fund - 2L & 3L only

  • This endowment is available to a student from Southwestern Pennsylvania. Award recipients are to be entering their second year of study and will be selected based on outstanding academic performance in their first year of study and financial need. The award may be renewed for a recipient's third year of study if the selection criteria are maintained.

Spector Scholarship - Incoming 1L 

  • This scholarship is available to an incoming first year student and renewable for the second and third year providing the student maintain satisfactory academic progress.

W. Edward Sell and Cordelia F. Sell Scholarship - 2L & 3L only

  • This scholarship is available to second and third year students that have successfully completed their first year of law school at the University of Pittsburgh. The recipient will demonstrate high academic achievement as exemplified by their cumulative grade point average. Candidates must also demonstrate personal responsibility, as well as commitment to the School of Law.

Judge Harry A. Kramer Scholarship Fund- Incoming 1L or  2L  only

  • This scholarship is available to incoming first year and second year students that interested in pursuing public interest law.

Benjamin M. and Lillian R. Seiger Endowed Book Fund- Incoming 1L

  • This scholarship is available to incoming first year students who demonstrate financial need to purchase textbooks and other resource materials.

Duff Family Scholarship Fund Established by Daniel Duff - 2L  or 3L only

  • This scholarship is available to a law student with financial need and a demonstrated interest in working in the public sector.  The scholarship is in honor of the four generations of Duffs who have graduated from or taught at Pitt Law School: John T. Duff - '08, who taught law there for 40 + years; his sons, John M. Duff - '38, William R. Duff - '41, and Richard O. Duff (Yale Law - ‘48), who taught there; his grandson, Daniel Duff - ‘68; and his great grandson, Daniel M. Booker - '15  

Professor Alan Meisel Endowed Scholarship-3L only

  • This scholarship is available to third year J.D. law students in the Health Law Certificate Program.  This scholarship is awarded based on academic merit and financial need.  J.D. students enrolled in the Center for Bioethics and Health Law may also be considered for this scholarship.
