The Barco Law Library and University of Pittsburgh subscribe to many databases for law faculty and students to use for research and study.
Please note that many of these databases can only be accessed if you are at a computer in the law school (including through the wireless network).
Below is an alphabetical listing our databases. (Note: For University-wide databases, see the University Library System Databases A-Z)

- ABA/BNA Lawyer's Manual on Professional Conduct
- A source for news and guidance on many aspects of attorney conduct and legal ethics.
- Academic (LexisNexis)
- Access to over 6,000 news, business, and legal sources including primary source material such as case law, statutes and regulations as well as secondary source materials such as legal news and law reviews.
- American State Papers 1789-1838 (Readex)
- Legislative and Executive documents, many from the period between 1789 and the beginning of the U.S. Congressional Serial Set in 1817.
- Arbitration (Kluwer)
- A leading online resource for international arbitration research, this database contains commentary from expert authors and an extensive collection of primary source materials.
- Bloomberg BNA Titles
- We subscribe to a number of Bloomberg BNA legal newsletters and libraries; this list shows all the Bloomberg BNA subscriptions.
- Bloomberg Law
- A major legal database available only to Pitt Law students and faculty; registration and password required.

- CALI Lessons
- Computer Assisted Legal Instruction has very helpful online tutorials that drill students on law course subject matter.
- CCH Tax Network
- State and Federal primary and secondary sources.
- Chronicle of Higher Education
- Daily news about everything going on in colleges and universities across the country.
- Congressional Quarterly Today
- The latest in legislative news published daily by Congressional Quarterly Inc.
- Congressional - ProQuest
- - A database that indexes Congressional information, and has full text of all Congressional hearings from 1830 to the present. Invaluable in doing Legislative history research.
- Congressional Serial Set
- The US Congressional Serial Set (from Readex) contains all of the US Senate and House of Representatives Reports, Documents, and Journals and constitutes a rich source of primary source material on all aspects of American history including many maps and tables. Upon completion, the digital version of the Serial Set will consist of approximately 13,800 volumes and over 12 million pages and will cover the time period 1817 through 1994.
- Environment Reporter Bloomberg BNA
- From Bloomberg BNA, weekly articles about environmental law and policy in U.S. & other countries.
- Environmental Law Reporter
- The ELR, published by the Environmental Law Institute, is an environmental, natural resources, toxic tort, energy, health/safety, and land use law research tool containing original source documents, editorial summaries, and expert analysis on state, federal, and international issues.
- Feminist Theory
- An international, interdisciplinary journal that provides a forum for critical analysis and debate within feminist theory.
- The Hague Academy Collected Courses Online
- The Hague Academy is a prestigious international institution for the study and teaching of Public and Private International Law and related subjects. Its purpose is to encourage a thorough and impartial examination of the problems arising from international relations in the field of law. The courses deal with the theoretical and practical aspects of the subject, including legislation and case law. All courses at the Academy are, in principle, published in the language in which they were delivered in the Collected Courses of the Hague Academy of International Law.
- Hein Online
- Best known for its full-text of hundreds of law journals from 1880's onward, HeinOnline also has a growing list of classic legal treatises, the US Legislative History library, the US Statutes at Large, the US Code, the Code of Federal Regulations and the Federal Register, and more historic and current legal sources, all in pdf format.
- Index to Legal Periodicals Retrospective, 1908-1981
- This retrospective database indexes over 750 legal periodicals published in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Annual surveys of the laws of a jurisdiction, annual surveys of the federal courts, yearbooks, annual institutes, and annual reviews of the work in a given field or on a given topic will also be covered.
- International Trade Reporter Bloomberg BNA
- Weekly newsletter summarizing agreements, disputes, taxation, cooperation, organization news about world trade from BNA.
- JStor
- "Journal Storage - the scholarly journal archive" contains a reliable and comprehensive archive of important scholarly journal literature - across academic fields.
- Labor & Employment Law Library Bloomberg BNA
- This "library" from Bloomberg BNA is a complete resource for cases, guidance, and news in all major areas of the field.
- Leadership Library Online
- This extensive directory contains information about thousands of contacts in law firms, courts, non-profit organizations, government organizations, corporations and more.
- Legal Scholarship Network
- This collection contains the legal scholarship in SSRN - the Social Science Research Network. Abstracts of recent legal scholarship.
- Legal Trac
- An index to legal periodicals that also provides some links to full text articles.
- LEXISNEXIS
- A major legal database available only to Pitt Law students and faculty; registration and password required.
- LLMC (Law Library Microform Collection)
- This collection is continually growing as more of the microfiche content owned by LLMC is digitized. You must visit the website to see what is currently available. Collections are grouped under the headings U.S. Federal, U.S. States, U.S. Territories, Anglo-American Collections, Foreign Jurisdictions, International Law and Organizations, & Multi-Jurisdictional Subject Collections.
- Loislaw
- Loislaw offers a powerful, one-source digital gateway to primary law, public records, treatises and legal forms.
- Max Planck Institute Encyclopedia of Public International Law
- MPEPIL represents an updated, comprehensive work covering the central and essential topics in international law.
- National Journal Group
- Our National Journal subscription gives users access to National Journal Daily and National Journal Hotline, with nonpartisan insight on politics and policy.
- PACER
- An electronic public access service of the United States federal courts run by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. Pacer allows users to obtain case and docket information from the Federal Appellate, District and Bankruptcy courts. Registration and login are required.
- Pittsburgh Legal Journal Opinions
- Pittsburgh Legal Journal Opinions published on the Allegheny County Bar Association website. As of Nov. 2009 these opinions are no longer available in print, and are only available on the ACBA website.
- ProQuest Statistical Datasets (select "Statistical Datasets" from the "Related Subscriptions" dropdown menu at the top center of the page)
- An online service that enables researchers to build statistical tables and charts from multiple sources in a single interface. This online interactive statistical solution aggregates over 5,500 licensed and public domain datasets provided by over 60 sources. Note: You MUST have the most recent version of Java installed on your computer.
- SmartCILP
- This site allows law faculty to access weekly E-mail reports from the Current Index to Legal Periodicals.
- SSRN (Social Science Research Network)
- SSRN promotes the rapid worldwide dissemination of social science research and is composed of a number of specialized research networks including the Legal Scholarship Network. Contains papers that are works in progress as well as completed and published work.
- Tax & Accounting Center (Bloomberg BNA)
- This Bloomberg BNA database includes everything a tax attorney might need, with primary and secondary sources for tax law on the state, federal, and international levels.
- TRACfed
- This unique database contains a wealth of information about the federal government and its enforcement activities.
- United Nations Treaty Collection
- Full text of treaties deposited with the U.N.
- U.S. Law Week
- This informative weekly Bloomberg BNA newsletter reports the most significant cases and key legislative, regulatory, and pre-decisional developments, across the country, across all areas of the law.
- Westlaw
- Major legal database available only to Pitt Law faculty and students. Registration and password required.
- Wilson Web
- Barco subscribes to Index to Legal Periodicals Retrospective through Wilson.
- World Intellectual Property Report
- A Bloomberg BNA report that has monthly news and analysis of developments in the regulation and enforcement of intellectual property rights worldwide.
- Worldcat
- The WorldCat database is the OCLC Online Union Catalog. It contains more than 43 million records describing items owned by our libraries or libraries around the world. Use it to locate materials that aren't owned by any of the Pitt libraries.
