On Friday, January 18 Professor Flechtner spoke at a conference at Villanova Law School entitled “Has the Time Come for a New Global Initiative to Harmonize and Unify International Trade.”  The conference was prompted by a proposal from the Swiss government to have the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) study the feasibility of a more comprehensive instrument for uniform international contract law, to build on the success of the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG).  Speakers at the conference included the Secretary of UNCITRAL, a representative of the Office of Private International Law of the U.S. State Department’s Legal Advisor, and leading scholars on international commercial law from around the world.  Professor Flechtner’s address was entitled “A Critique of the Swiss Proposal to Study a More Comprehensive Regime of International Contract Law.”
