David Harris on Orie Jury Deliberations
Professor David Harris commented on the fifth day of jury deliberations after the three-week trial of State Senator Jane Orie. Professor Harris said that the judge will not declare a mistrial unless the jury indicates it is hopelessly deadlocked with no chance of reaching a verdict. "Judges want this to go to the point where...the jury says, "We simply can't [reach a verdict.]...My prediction is that the judge will go quite far to get the jury to agree on at least some of [the counts]."
