Professor Hellman Comments on Role of Senior Federal Judges

April 4, 2011 A senior judge is a regular judge who, upon qualifying for retirement, decides to semi-retire instead by taking a reduced caseload. Since senior status bars them from working in the private legal sector, they forgo lucrative jobs as private mediators, said University of Pittsburgh law professor Arthur Hellman, who studies the federal court system.
"They're working -- really -- for nothing," he said. "They really are doing a public service."
