David Harris on Upcoming Civil Rights Trials Against Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Arizona

Publish Date/Time:

Professor David Harris discussed the upcoming civil trials against Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona for violations of constitutional rights.  Professor Harris told the Arizona Republic that the cases depend on solid statistical evidence, but must also be bolstered by other evidence.  In the case against Arpaio, internal communications gathered through discovery will be key items of evidence.  The plaintiffs will "have to have good, solid statistical evidence (of racial profiling)…But if the internal communications [are] damning enough, the statistics would be proven out -- they would prove each other. The statistics would prove that the intent of the memos was carried out."
