Clinic and Externship Registration Information
Clinics
There is no limit on the cumulative number of credit hours students may earn in Clinic courses. However, Clinic registrations are governed by the following procedures (please refer to the individual course descriptions for each clinic's procedures):
- You may not take more than 10 credit hours of clinic in any given semester.
- A student enrolled in a clinic for seven credits is encouraged to enroll in no more than two (2) other courses.
- You are advised to complete the Upper Division Legal Writing Requirement in a different semester.
- You may take an EXTERNSHIP or a PRACTICUM and a clinic in the same semester.
- During the add/drop period, you may neither add nor drop a clinic without the permission of Clinic Administrators: Civil Practice Clinic - Jane LeHew; Environmental Clinic - Nadine Hamlett.
Externships
- The maximum number of credits a student can earn for externships is 4. The credit maximum includes summer EXTERNSHIP credits. Participation, or nonparticipation, in a clinic course or a practicum does NOT affect this limit on EXTERNSHIP credits. Additionally, all credit hours may be earned with the same agency.
- IN ORDER TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR YOUR SUMMER EXTERNSHIP YOU MUST REGISTER FOR THE COURSE FOR THE FALL TERM. THE CREDITS WILL BE AWARDED AT THE END OF THE FALL TERM.
Registration for fall and spring externships takes place as part of the regular registration process for the term in which you are working in the externship.
If you have any questions concerning the CLINIC/EXTERNSHIP registration process, please contact the Law School Registrar's Office before submitting your course selection forms.
