Registration Guidelines and Procedures
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU REGISTER TO
MAXIMIZE YOUR SELECTIONS AND CHANCES OF GETTING THE COURSES YOU
WANT.
Do not waste a selection. Be aware of any and all prerequisites which govern
registration for a course before selecting that course.
CREDIT MAXIMUMS
All students may initially select no more than 18 credits. Your initial course selections are
limited in order to make more courses available during the add/drop period, so you will have more scheduling options.
In totaling the credits you have selected, remember that each course selected, including those selections which you are asked to rank in order of preference (Core Courses, Limited Enrollment Courses, and Seminars) counts towards the credit maximum.
- There is nothing to be gained by submitting a course selection form before anyone else.
- Order of entry does NOT influence a student’s chances of getting his or her selected
courses. - Course Selection Forms submitted after the stated deadlines cannot be included in the registration process and enrollment for those students will be on a space-available basis only.
- Check the bulletin board to the RIGHT of the Registrar’s Office Service Window OR on the Registrar’s web page under curriculum changes BEFORE you submit course
selections via the web OR at the Registrar’s Office so that you are aware of any changes to the registration information.
Students are enrolled in courses according to the following schemes:
DEFINITIONS
Priority: The criteria that the registration system uses to rank each student before enrolling
that student in courses. Priority is based upon a student’s year in school and
his/her previous registration record.
Preference: The ranking (1, 2, or 3) that a student assigns to a particular course to indicate the degree of interest he/she has in a course. You cannot use one preference ranking
more than once within the same category of each course section.
REGISTRATION PREFERENCES AND RANKINGS
Students are enrolled in courses based on the combination of each student’s preferences together with that student’s priorities. Students who rank a course with a #1 preference AND who meet #1 priority criteria are the first to be enrolled in that course. Students who meet the #1 priority, BUT who rank the course with a #2 preference, will NOT be enrolled until all of the #1 priority, #1 preference students are enrolled. And so on . . .
CAUTION: Choose preference rankings for each of the courses you select that requires a rank. If you do not assign preference rankings to each of your selections where required, the registration program will randomly assign preference rankings for you. Do not assign the same preference rank to more than one course in the same category.
REGISTRATION PRIORITIES
Each course falls into one, and only one, of the following three categories: Core Courses, Limited Enrollment and Seminar Courses, and Open Enrollment Courses. Priority within each category is assigned as follows:
-
Core Courses
#1 Priority: SECOND-YEAR STUDENTS
Third-year students are enrolled on a space-available basis only. For the Spring Semester, #1 priority is given to second-year students who were NOT enrolled in any Fall Semester Core Course. Third-year students are guaranteed enrollment in a core course only if they register for ALL sections of the course offered. However, there is no guarantee that a third-year student will be enrolled in the course during the semester that he/she prefers. -
Limited Enrollment and Seminar Courses
#1 Priority: Third-year students who previously have NOT been enrolled in a limited enrollment/seminar course.
#2 Priority: Second-year students who previously have NOT been enrolled in a limited enrollment/seminar course.
#3 Priority: Third-year students who previously HAVE been enrolled in a limited enrollment/seminar course.
#4 Priority: Second-year students who previously HAVE been enrolled in a limited enrollment/seminar course. -
Open Enrollment Courses
Open to ALL registering students, with NO priority given to year in school or to previous enrollment in an open enrollment course.
EXCEPTIONS
- Joint Degree Students: A student currently pursuing a joint degree is given priority ONLY FOR HIS/HER #1 PREFERENCE IN EACH CATEGORY. Joint degree students fall within the same set of priorities ON ALL OTHER SELECTIONS.
- Late registrations: Once all course selection forms have been entered and the registration program has assigned students to classes, late registrations will be assigned to classes on a space- available basis only. This applies to all students, including joint degree students.
ADD/DROP PERIOD
During the FIRST Add/Drop Period, scheduled for — March 31 through April 4 — you may make the following adjustments to your SPRING semester schedule:
- Add any OPEN Enrollment course. Refer to the enrollment list posted to the left of the Service Window for the enrollment status of each course.
- DROP any course
IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION
CREDIT LOAD, AND FINAL ADD/DROP
IF YOU GET REGISTERED FOR MULTIPLE SECTIONS OF THE SAME COURSE YOU MUST DROP ALL BUT ONE SECTION DURING THE FIRST ADD/DROP PERIOD. IF YOU DO NOT DROP DUPLICATE COURSES, THE REGISTRAR’S OFFICE WILL DROP YOU FROM THE COURSE THAT YOU GAVE THE LOWER RANK TO ON YOUR REGISTRATION FORM.
By the end of the FIRST Add/Drop Period, you must be registered for NO FEWER THAN 10 AND NO MORE THAN 15 CREDITS EACH SEMESTER. Students who wish to carry more than 15 credits must petition for an overload during the FINAL Add/Drop Period for that semester. Refer to the academic calendar for those dates.
If you have any questions concerning these registration procedures, please speak with Registrar’s Office staff BEFORE submitting your course selections.
FALL FINAL ADD/DROP
The final add/drop period for the fall term will be held from Monday, August 25, 2008 through Friday, August 29, 2008. During the final add/drop period, students will be registered for courses on a first-come first-served basis.
Except for those classes that meet for the first time on Thursday afternoon, August 28, and except as otherwise provided, students must drop any class they do no want for the spring term by 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 28. For those courses that meet for the first time on Thursday afternoon or evening, students will have until 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29, 2008, to drop those courses. By requiring students to drop unwanted classes by Thursday at 1:00 p.m., we hope to afford all students an equal opportunity to add a class on the last day of add/drop if an opening is available. Any drop forms submitted after the applicable deadlines will incur an additional $20 fee payable at the Registrar’s Window, plus any additional fees the University may charge for late changes to a schedule.
