Information Technology

Services for Students

The Information Technology Department provides limited support for student laptops.  We are happy to provide technical assistance and advice to students concerning University supported software and network configuration.  Depending on the severity of the problem and whether the issue is hardware or software related, we may direct you to seek further assistance through your manufacturer or with CSSD Student Computing. The consultants are students at the University of Pittsburgh who can help with campus network connections, virus and spyware removal, software installation, data backups, and much more.  To schedule an appointment, contact the Technology Help Desk at 412-624-HELP [4357].  Walk-in service is available at the Towers Lobby Support Center or the University Store on Fifth.

Please feel free to stop by the IT office (Rm. 425) with any questions and concerns you may have.  We are available 8:30 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

Technology Bar

The first of several improvements to come to the computer lab in the library, the Technology Bar is a workspace where students can plug in and charge their own devices. There are USB charging stations and plugs and plenty of space to work sitting on stools or standing up.

Wireless Network

The Barco Law Building provides Wifi internet access throughout the building.  Help Sheets with step by step configuration instructions are available from CSSD and on the handout rack outside of our office.  To report any problems with the Wireless Network, please report the problem to the University Help Desk via helpdesk@pitt.edu or 412-624-HELP.

ExamSoft Assistance

For exams allowing laptops, students are not required to come to the Registrar's Office to sign-up for those exams they wish to take on their laptop. However, in order to take your exams on your laptop, you must have downloaded and installed the ExamSoft SofTest software and watched the appropriate training video for your platform (Windows or Mac).  See Exam Laptop Information.

For technical support with ExamSoft SofTest software, please contact ExamSoft here.

Laptop Security

LoJack allows your laptop to be traced in the event that it is ever lost or stolen. You report the loss or theft to local police authorities, contact Computrace, and let the software installed on your computer work behind the scenes to silently and securely send its location to the Computrace Monitoring Center. The Computrace Recovery Team then tracks your computer's location and partners with local law enforcement to attempt to get your computer back.  LoJack is free for registered Pitt students from CSSD.

In addition, the Barco Law Library loans cable locks if you need one while in the Library.  See the Curculation Desk for more information.
