The latest versions of the exam software, Securexam Student are now available to download from the Extranet(https://extranet.law.pitt.edu).

PC users should upgrade and test the latest version, 6.4.11, before the beginning of the Exam period. Among the fixes in the new version is the ability for students with the 64-bit version of Vista to use the transfer utility.

Mac users do not need to upgrade unless they did not install the newest version in the Fall.

Problem: Students using the 64-bit version of Wndows Vista will most likely receive the following error in the status field when attempting to upload their exam...

Could not load file or assembly 'SesFileValidators, Version = 1.0.0.0, Culture = neutral, PublicKeyToken = null' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.

To check if you have the 64-bit version of Vista open Computer from the Windows Menu and click on System Properties in the toolbar. In the middle of the window there will be a section titled System Type that will identify your version of Vista as either 64-bit or 32-bit.

Fix: Students affected by this issue can upload their exams manually through http://www.planetssi.com.

1. Go to http://www.planetssi.com in your web browser.

2. Click on "Exam Center" on the left hand menu.

3. Locate your class under "Classes and Exams" near the bottom of the page (note, your class will not show up until you have completed your exam).

4. Click the "Upload" button next to the class you want to upload your exam for.

5. Click "Browse". Locate your exam file saved on the Desktop of your computer. Select the file and click "Ok".

6. Click "Upload" again to transfer your exam.

7. You will receive an "Exam submitted successfully" confirmation dialog box.

A few students have reported that running the Securexam Software freezes their computer, and on a restart their computer boots to a blank desktop with no Start Menu or task bar. If you are experiencing this problem, follow these instructions to restore your Desktop.

1. Press the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys on the keyboard.
2. Click the Task Manager button if the Task Manager is not the first window to appear.
3. Select the “New Task (Run…)” command on the “File” menu.
4. Type the word “regedit” and click OK.
5. Click “Continue” if necessary.
6. Open the “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE” folder.
7. Open the “Software” folder.
8. Open the “Microsoft” folder.
9. Open the “Windows NT” folder.
10. Open the “Current Version” folder.
11. Click on the “WinLogon” folder to select it.
12. On the right side of the Registry Editor window, right-click the “Shell” item and select the “Modify” command.
13. Change the “Value data” field to “explorer.exe”.
14. Close the Registry Editor.
15. Press the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys on the keyboard.
16. The first window that appears (either the Task Manager or the Security window, depending on the operating system) may have a button or menu item to restart the computer. If so, select it.
17. If there is no option to restart the computer, display the Task Manager.
18. Select the “New Task (Run…)” command on the “File” menu.
19. Type the word “cmd” and click OK.
20. In the Command Prompt window, type the command “shutdown –r” and press the Enter key.

After restoring your Desktop, please stop by our office in Rm 425 of
the Barco Law Building (M-F 8:30am-5pm) so that the IT staff can identify the
underlying cause.
