Dear law school community,
We are horrified, angered, and saddened by the continued racism and violence against Black people in our country. As our Chancellor and our Provost have also stated earlier today, Black communities and Black people have suffered too much, too often, and for too long from the long-standing, historical wrong that began at the country’s founding. It will only end when all of us, each and every one of us, is accountable for and reckons with our part in the biased, unequal, and unfair system that exists today.
As reflected in last night’s dialogue, police brutality and the senseless killing of too many in the Black community, like Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and now George Floyd, has brought deep pain, anguish, grief, and rage. These horrific, awful tragedies occur far too frequently and leave those in Black communities traumatized and in fear. We support, stand with, and extend our love to the Black members of our community and the Black community as a whole. And we are ready to take action.
In the coming year, like the School of Education, we will work to wrestle with the legacy of our country’s systemic racism, to deeply understand the trauma and pain of Black communities and our complicity in it, to stand up against inequality, white supremacy, and hatred in all forms, and to use our training to fight for equal justice for all. Our Office of Equity and Inclusive Excellence will take the lead on our initiatives and will continue to provide support to you. We will also soon add an Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusive Excellence who will provide additional leadership and expertise to create the new programs and strategies we need to truly deliver on our Pitt Law mission to advance and transform the law and our society.
It is a time for action, change, and reform. It is time for all of us to stand together as our Pitt Law community to give voice to the Black community and commit to end the racism, hate, violence and inequality that plagues our society.
With deepest respect,
Dean Amy and Dean Hamoudi
