Course Description

Effective lawyering requires the ability to communicate a convincing story from a client's point of view. In this class, students will improve their critical reading skills, their writing skills, and their ability to tell a persuasive story by (1) reading and critically discussing well-written short fiction and similar forms of communication, such as poetry, song lyrics, and speeches; and (2) producing their own written work to be critically reviewed and discussed by the class. Students will read and discuss several examples of quality writing produced by a diverse group of authors, all with a law-related theme, and often exploring sensitive topics. Student written work will be similarly reviewed and discussed by the entire class. Students will be expected to develop a clear theme, and to present their writing in a focused, coherent manner. The focus on short stories and similar materials is intended to expose students to a higher quality of writing than that typically found in legal authorities such as cases and statutes. The class will emphasize critical reading skills and the importance of thorough editing and refinement of one's work. We will also explore the persuasive power of effective story telling. Regular attendance and thorough preparation will be critical.
