Center for International Legal Education Fellowships

To encourage JD students to engage in international study, the Center for International Legal Education offers fellowships for students pursuing study, research, or internships abroad. Awards are typically in an amount of $500.00 to $1,500.00, depending upon need, merit, and the number of students selected for funding. Fellowship information will be announced in the E-Docket on-line early in the spring semester. The deadline is mid March. Applications can be obtained from the CILE office in Room 317A of the School of Law.

Chinese Summer Language Study Scholarship

This scholarship provides a $5000 award for an approved program of Chinese language study in the United States or China. Students must have completed at least 2 years of Chinese language study or the equivalent by the inception of the award period. The deadline for submission is February 3, 2014. Japanese Summer Language Study Scholarship

These scholarships provide $2,000 tuition awards to graduate students for an approved program of Japanese language study in the United States or Japan. Students must have completed at least 2 years of Japanese language study or the equivalent by the inception of the award period.  Preference will be given to students applying for specialized advanced language workshops.  Summer Intensive Japanese at the University of Pittsburgh is not included in this award. China Studies Tuition Remission Scholarship

These awards cover tuition expenses for all or part of one or two terms of full-time study at the University of Pittsburgh for: (1) graduate students, of any nationality, in any field of China studies; or (2) graduate students, in any field, from Greater China, which includes the People's Republic of China, the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Maggio Fellowship - American Immigration Lawyers Association

The Maggio Fellowship provides funding to current law students with a demonstrated commitment to social justice and/or immigrants’ rights. The student must spend a minimum of 10 weeks over the summer working for a non-profit organization with projects that further the purposes of the fellowship. More information and applications can be found here. This fellowship is open to students working for non-profits related to immigration. The due date for this fellowship is: Monday February 17, 2014.

Fellowship amount: $1,500.00

Harry Ransom Humanities Research Fellowships

Provides funding and access to the immense Ransom library in Austin, Texas for approximately forty projects per year. Annual themes invite research proposals on topics such as cross-cultural expression in times of war. Submit a proposal to apply for this fellowship. Award: $3,000 Deadline: February

Arthur C. Helton Fellowship

Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law Essay Award

Summer East Asian Language Study (SEALS) Japan Tuition Remission Scholarship

A small number of full-tuition scholarships are available for summer SEALS Japan students who will be enrolled in JPNSE 1061 or JPNSE 1062. The deadline for submission is March 14, 2014. Critical Language Scholarships

Scholarships for intensive overseas study in the critical need foreign languages of Arabic, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu. Department of State funding to participate in beginning, intermediate and/or advanced level summer language programs at American Overseas Research Centers and affiliated partners. James Baker Hughes Writing Competition

Annual competition on international economic law. “International economic law” is a broad term that can include all legal aspects of economic relations, from private business matters to international trade conflicts. The article must be an unpublished student-written manuscript. The Washington Foreign Law Society - Ibrahim Shihata Prize for Outstanding Student Writing in Islamic Law

Award: $2,500. The winner will be an honored guest at the WFLS Annual Dinner Gala

Dean Acheson Legal Stage Program in Luxembourg

The Dean Acheson Legal Stage (traineeship/internship) Program in Luxembourg at the Court of Justice of the European Union, administered by the U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg, offers a unique opportunity to work in the EU’s justice system for up to a three month period. Applicants must have a working competency in French, though fluency is not required.  Contact the CILE office in Room 317A for more details – applications are generally due by late March / early April. 

International Association of Defense Counsel

There are four prizes for this contest $2,000, $1,000, $500 and a plaque. The top three also receive a plaque, and all four will be considered for publication in the IADC’s publication. The essays must be written on subjects in the fields of tort law, insurance law, civil procedure, evidence or other areas of the law of practical concern to lawyers engaged in the defense or management of the defense of civil litigation. IADC was formed for the purpose of soliciting contributions to educate the public and the legal community and to fund programs and present public forums dealing with litigation.
