Jessie Allen Gives Two Presentations in Australia

Professor Jessie Allen presented her work recently at two of the leading universities in Australia.

Professor Allen gave a paper at an international symposium at the University of Adelaide, in Adelaide, Australia.  The conference, Reinterpreting Blackstone’s Commentaries, sought the views of international experts on the evolution and influence of Blackstone’s Commentaries on the Laws of England.   The event consisted of was a small interdisciplinary symposium, including participants from the University of Virginia, Oxford University, University of Edinburgh, University of Toronto, and Georgetown University.  All participants were present for the full day’s meeting, which was convened as part of a project by a group of international scholars, led by Wilfrid Prest, Blackstone’s biographer, to produce a new variorum edition of the Commentaries.    Professor Allen’s paper, Reading Blackstone in the 21st Century and the 21st Century through Blackstone, combined original research on the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent increased citations to Blackstone with material drawn from the essays on her blog, Blackstone WeeklyThe conference program is here.

Professor Allen gave another paper, Theater of International Justice, at the Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia.  Melbourne is Australia’s leading law school and is widely regarded as one of the top law schools in the world.  Professor Allen’s talk was presented as a freestanding seminar under the auspices of Melbourne Law School’s Institute for International Law and the Humanities.  The well-attended event drew an engaged audience from a wide range of disciplines, including law, geography, political science, sociology. The University’s announcement for Professor Allen’s talk is here.
