John Burkoff Talks About Death Penalty “Volunteers”

Professor John Burkoff was quoted on April 26 in the Pocono Record in a story about a homicide defendant who wants to be executed.

“The problem is that often, about 20 percent of the time, these ‘volunteers’ change their minds somewhere down the road, sometimes too late,” Burkoff said. “So, we want to make sure they really and truly realize what they are doing and really want to do it, to try and ensure we don’t find ourselves in a situation later where the supposed ‘volunteer’ decides he or she has made a big mistake.”
