Chronicle of Higher Education Highlights Pitt Law's Immigration Law Clinic

Sheila I. Vélez Martínez, Director of Clinic Programs and the Jack & Lovell Olender Professor of Refugee, Asylum, and Immigration Law, has led the only immigration law clinic in western Pennsylvania at Pitt Law, which was highlighted this week by The Chronicle of Higher Education

The impetuous shifts in law and policy under the Trump administration has placed the clinic and its students in a constant state of uncertainty and higher caseload. Martínez told the Chronicle the way her clinic chooses and handles cases has shifted from previous years, especially now, when it comes to appeals for asylum. Despite the challenges, Martínez said she relied on the dedication of her students to meet the higher demand under the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
