David and Carl Janavitz Fellowship in First Amendment Law
First Amendment Law has a long history of importance to the academic legal community as well as all citizens of this country. Given the legal and policy concerns and possibilities created by applying First Amendment Law to traditional areas as well as new technologies such as the Internet, it remains essential today to demonstrate how scholarly legal writing, research, and legal work generally can awaken and inform public awareness of the profound issues at stake.
This Fellowship was created to provide funding for a JD student with a special interest in and demonstrated talent for analysis of legal and public policy issues concerning First Amendment Law. The fellowship appointment will be for one year with an award of $10,000. The selection of the fellow will be made by a committee after reviewing the application along with the required supporting documents. All rising second and third year students are eligible to apply. The deadline for David and Carl Janavitz Fellowship application is April 1st.
Dentons Cohen & Grigsby Diversity Fellowship Fund
Dentons Cohen & Grigsby and Pitt Law have established the Dentons Cohen & Grigsby Diversity Fellowship Fund, which provides tuition support for a first-year law student from an underrepresented group, renewable up to two years based on academic merit. The Fund also provides recipients with a paid summer associate position at Dentons Cohen & Grigsby in the student's first summer of law school with an opportunity to return for a second summer. Financial support will be awarded to one student in the academic year 2023-2024 and another in the academic year 2024-2025. All accepted students will be invited to apply.
K&L Gates Diversity Fellowship
Global law firm K&L Gates LLP and Pitt Law have collaborated in the establishment of the K&L Gates Diversity Fellowship, which provides a full-tuition scholarship to an entering student at Pitt Law for all three years of law school, as well as a paid summer associate position at K&L Gates in the student’s first summer of law school, with an opportunity to return for a second summer. The K&L Gates Diversity Fellowship was the first such partnership in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania between a law firm and a law school and one of the very few such partnerships in the entire country. All prospective students who apply to Pitt Law will be invited to apply for the Fellowship following admission, and those Fellowship applicants who submit a response to Question 3 under Section 12 (“Optional Information”) of the Pitt Law application will be given priority consideration for the Fellowship
John P. Gismondi Fund at the Allegheny County Bar Foundation
The John P. Gismondi Fund was established in January 2014 to provide summer employment opportunities to University of Pittsburgh law students at Neighborhood Legal Services(NLS) or other similar public interest non-profitorganizations providing legal services to those in need. The program is financed by a $225,000 donation to the Foundation by Pittsburgh attorney John P. Gismondi. Gismondi, a well-known, local trial attorney and Past President of the Allegheny County Bar Association, has been an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law for more than 25 years and is a graduate of the university and its law school.
Eligibility
The Gismondi Fund will sponsor four Summer Fellowship positions to students who have completed their second year of law school at the University of Pittsburgh and are certified to represent clients in accordance with the court rules of Allegheny County. The Gismondi Fellows will have the opportunity to earn real-world experience handling legal matters — including client contact — at public service organizations. In the past, Fellows have worked at Neighborhood Legal Services, KidsVoice and the offices of the county District Attorney and Public Defender.

Samuelson/Glushko Fellowship
The Samuelson/Glushko Fellowship provides a $2,500 stipend for Semester in D.C. Program students who are working in intellectual property and technology law externships. The Samuelson/Glushko Fellowship is funded by a gift from Professor Pamela Samuelson of the University of California-Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law and her husband, Dr. Robert J. Glushko, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur. Professor Samuelson is a former member of the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.
To apply for the Samuelson/Glushko Fellowship, you must first obtain an intellectual property or technology law externship that meets the Semester in D.C. Program requirements and has been approved by Professor Baylis. Then, complete this application (PDF Download) and submit it to pittindc@pitt.edu. The deadline to apply is November 30.
