The Honorable Cynthia Reed Eddy

Biography

The Honorable Cynthia Reed Eddy was sworn in to the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania as a United States Magistrate Judge on Oct. 20, 2011.  Judge Eddy became the Chief Magistrate Judge in 2018.  Prior to becoming a judge, Judge Eddy graduated, cum laude and Order of the Coif, from Washington and Lee University School of Law in 1982. She earned an L.L.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University School of Law in 1986. She served as a law clerk to the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia and in the United States Tax Court. Judge Eddy was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Western District of Pennsylvania for five years, where she prosecuted financial and corporate crimes. She was an associate at Morgan, Lewis and Bockius in Washington, D.C., a director at Cohen & Grigsby, P.C. in Pittsburgh, and, for ten years, a named partner at Johnson & Eddy, LLC.

Judge Eddy’s special judicial interests include participating as a volunteer judge on Bridges Court, which is a diversion court for federal criminal defendants with addiction issues.  Judge Eddy organizes and moderates an annual symposium on domestic abuse issues.  She is an active participant of the Allegheny County Bar Association and has presented numerous CLE programs, including the annual Third Circuit Review program.   Judge Eddy teaches a course as an adjunct law professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law on white collar crime.
