Ceremony

Venue Information Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland

Graduates should arrive at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall no later than 11:45 a.m. At 12:30 p.m. take your place in line alphabetically as directed by the Registrar. Last names ending in A-L, Health Care Compliance Certificate Students, HR Law Certificate Students, MSL and LLM students report to the left of the main doors and last names ending M-Z report to the right.

After you have taken your place in line you will receive a Commencement Program and a name card. You must retain the name card for presentation to Vice Dean, Haider Ala Hamoudi,  Associate Dean for Students, Kevin Deasy, Director of Online Programs and the MSL Program, Professor Alan Meisel, and Director of the Center for Legal Education Professor Ron Brand, will announce your name as you walk across the stage. If your name is difficult to pronounce, PRINT the phonetic spelling below your name on the card in large letters. The line-up area is small and your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Certificate students will lead the procession and should take their place at the front of the A-L line (left hallway) followed by the MSL, LLM, and JD students. Staff will assist you as you line up and the Registrar will lead the procession and seat you in the auditorium. You will enter the stage from the left and proceed as follows:

  • HCC Certificate students hand their Name Announcement Card to Prof. Mary Nell Cummings. As your name is read, proceed across the stage to Dean Wildermuth. The Dean will congratulate you and present you with your certificate. After receiving your certificate continue to move across the front of the stage to the steps along the wall and return to your original seat in the auditorium.
     
  • HR Certificate students hand their Name Announcement Card to Prof. Jay Hornack. As your name is read, proceed across the stage to Dean Wildermuth. The Dean will congratulate you and present you with your certificate. After receiving your certificate continue to move across the front of the stage to the steps along the wall and return to your original seat in the auditorium.
     
  • MSL students hand their Name Announcement Card to Prof. Alan Meisel. As your name is read, proceed across the stage to Dean Wildermuth. The Dean will congratulate you and present you with your scroll. After receiving your scroll, continue to move across the front of the stage to the steps along the wall and return to your original seat in the auditorium.
     
  • LLM Students will enter the stage area from the left. Please hand your Name Card to next professor in line on the stage. As your name is read, proceed across the stage to Dean Wildermuth. The Dean will congratulate you and present you with your scroll. After receiving your scroll, continue to move across the front of the stage to the steps along the wall and return to your original seat in the auditorium. Be seated as soon as you return so as not to obstruct the view of those seated behind you.
     
  • JD Students will enter the stage area from the left. Please hand your Name Card to one of the Associate Deans. As your name is read, proceed across the stage to Dean Wildermuth. The Dean will congratulate you and present you with your scroll. After receiving your scroll, continue to move across the front of the stage to the steps along the wall and return to your original seat in the auditorium. Be seated as soon as your return so as not to obstruct the view of those seated behind you.

After all students are announced, the Dean will ask the graduates to stand and move mortar board tassels from the right to the left and remain standing for applause.

Ceremony Photography

A photographer will be at the ceremony to take two (2) photographs of you at your special moment of recognition. You will receive your proofs in the mail a few weeks after the ceremony, at which time you may order prints if you choose. Since professional photographs will be available, family members and guests are encouraged to remain in their seats.

Recessional

The platform party will exit using the right stairs (facing the stage) and will exit. The faculty will follow the platform party. Then beginning with row “B”, graduates will stand one row at a time and follow. To avoid congestion, move away from the exits as quickly as possible. The audience will remain seated until after the Recessional.
