The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the legal tradition and legal systems of Latin America. The course begins with a consideration of the historical and formal sources of the Civil Law and the reception of the Civil Law tradition in Latin America. Thereafter, particular attention is paid to selected aspects of the legal process, constitutionalism, and other areas of law in various Latin American republics. The grade will be determined by a final, in-class examination.
