Biography
Alex has a broad range of litigation and regulatory experience representing financial institutions and other corporate clients, with a specific focus on representing broker-dealers in regulatory and enforcement actions, arbitration, and litigation.
Alex has served as both in-house and outside counsel to one of the nation’s largest broker-dealers, managing a broad range of regulatory matters. He regularly represents firms and registered representatives in inquiries and enforcement actions brought by the SEC, state regulators, and FINRA. Alex also represents broker-dealers in arbitrations and litigations, and has served as lead counsel in actions relating to variable annuities and share class selection.
Alex also represents major financial institutions and other companies in complex securities litigation, class actions, and sensitive investigations. He represented multiple high-profile financial institutions in litigation resulting from the credit crisis, including lawsuits over residential mortgage-backed securities, collateralized debt obligations, and other complex products. Alex has represented some of the world’s largest financial institutions in government investigations concerning LIBOR manipulation, foreign exchange trading, commodity futures and derivatives trading, and insider trading. Alex also represents clients in a wide range of class action lawsuits, including securities, employment-related, and consumer class actions.
In addition to these areas of focus, Alex litigates a broad array of commercial disputes and represents clients in all stages of litigation. As part of his energy practice, Alex represented and served as trial counsel to an interstate pipeline company in precedent-setting litigation under the Natural Gas Act. He has represented partners and shareholders in partnership disputes and shareholder oppression suits, as well as companies in contract and tort litigation.
Alex also maintains an active and dedicated pro bono practice. A fluent Spanish speaker and member of the Allegheny County Hispanic Bar Association, Alex represents clients seeking asylum, protection under the Convention Against Torture, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, and other forms of relief under immigration law.
Prior to working at McGuireWoods, Alex was an associate at a prominent international law firm in New York where he was honored by the Empire State Bar Association for his commitment to pro bono work. Alex is a graduate of the Yale Law School, where he served as an Editor on the Yale Law Journal. While at the Yale Law School, Alex was a student director of the Legal Services for Immigrant Communities Clinic and member of the Latino Law Students Association.
