Reshaping Government: Possibilities and Perils. The Firings of Inspectors General, the Demise of Independent and Nonpartisan Government Oversight, and the Unprecedented Attacks on the Federal Workforce.
Inspectors General have conducted independent and nonpartisan government oversight for almost 50 years. They fight fraud, waste and abuse, and promote the efficiency and effectiveness of government programs. In a typical year, they save taxpayers around $100 billion.
Building on his already distinguished career in government service and the practice of law, Michael Missal began serving as the inspector general of the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2016. He will discuss the history of inspectors general, their roles and responsibilities (including assisting Congress in its oversight of the Executive Branch), the great impact they have had for our government and how they promote accountability and transparency.
The program is presented by the Dick Thornburgh Forum and will be moderated by Chancellor Emeritus Mark Nordenberg.

2026 Nordenberg Lecture in Law, Medicine, and Psychiatry: The Past, Present, and Future of Immigrant Access to Health Care in the U.S.
This CLE will be presented by Medha D. Makhlouf, Professor of Law and Director of the Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic at Penn State Dickinson Law, with a courtesy appointment in Public Health Sciences. Makhlouf’s talk will address the relationship between immigration status and access to health care. Makhlouf will track the ways that law has shaped this relationship over time and discuss how current events have impacted the exercise of current rights.
