Center for Bioethics & Health Law

The University of Pittsburgh Center for Bioethics & Health Law, housed in Pitt Law, brings together clinicians, scholars, and investigators from many schools and disciplines across the University to investigate issues in bioethics and health law by employing empirical, philosophical, and legal research methods. Over the years, the Center has been recognized as a leader in empirical research on such topics as informed consent, organ donation, and long-term care, as well as scholarly research on issues ranging from conscientious objection to the right to die to ethical issues in genetic research and genomic medicine.

The Center serves as the hub of bioethics education and consultation at the University, providing graduate-level education in bioethics in cooperation with Pitt Law, the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Medicine through innovative degree and degree-related programs. The Center also provides clinical ethics education to medical students and house staff and, through the Consortium Ethics Program, bioethics education for clinical staff in regional health care facilities.

Pitt Law offers a joint JD/MA in Law/Bioethics and the Health Law Certificate Program that affords law students the opportunity to study bioethics.
