Education Law - 2251

This course explores the often contentious relationship between federal, state, and local law and policy in the shaping of the American education system. It will examine past and current legal challenges faced by the system in areas such as school desegregation, discrimination on the basis of race, gender, disability, and immigration status, compulsory school attendance, freedom of religion, school financing and resource distribution, school discipline and policing, and federal mandates with high stakes testing. The course will equip students with a deeper understanding of the interconnection between the fundamental social and political principles underlying the education system and the development of education law jurisprudence.
